Afternoon Tea

During the early nineteenth century Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. At the time it was usual for people to take only two main meals a day, breakfast, and dinner at around 8 o’clock in the evening.

The solution for the Duchess was a pot a tea and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon. Other social hostesses quickly picked up on the idea and the practice became respectable enough to move it into the drawing room. Before long all fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon.

Afternoon tea taken at Crabwall Manor Hotel & Spa lets your imagination run wild and transports you back to 1840 when afternoon tea was first introduced.

Set among acres of beautiful grounds, the hotel itself is a stunning venue that combines traditional architecture with modern day luxury.

Where better to enjoy a decadent afternoon tradition much favoured by sophisticated Victorian ladies than in a marvellous setting little changed since those times?

Afternoon tea at Crabwall Manor is a leisurely affair in a luxurious setting. Afternoon tea includes a delectable mix of sandwiches, sweet treats and scones with clotted cream and jam, alongside a choice of Ceylon teas or freshly brewed coffee.

Why not add a glass of prosecco or champagne for ultimate indulgence and take some time after tea to stroll around the grounds and admire the incredible views towards the historic city of Chester.

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” – Henry James
